This interview with Kim Larsen who is creator, ideologist, author and frontman of project Of The Wand & The Moon, was in addition to the report on his Moscow concert September 17, 2011 in CC DOM. Report is available in section REPORTS.
Evilly: Kim, your music is very melancholic, romantic and sad. But it is very wonderful and inspiring. And even at the concert seems you do it for one person, whom you really love. Who or what inspires you? Is it true?
Kim: Well, yes, my music is often very personal. Not sure what to reply... Well, it's personal.
Evilly: Of The Wand & The Moon is one-man project by Kim Larsen. But in the live concerts you play with other musicians. How do you choose them? How often do they change? Are there those who want to build long-term relations or even new projects?
Kim: My keyboardplayer, Niels is the one who has been doing liveshows with me the longest. Since the first show in 2001, warming up for Trio Noir. Think the live members have more or less joined by coincidence. My new Bass player (stand-in keyboardplayer at the Russian shows) is an old friend of mine that I have known even before I started OTWATM. Actually he introduced me to Saturnus when they needed a guitarist those many years ago.
Evilly: I know you don’t like talk about Saturnus in interview. Therefore my question is about doom metal, which sometimes also gothic scene includes. Do you like to listen to this music? Do you like playing it or everything is in the past? And now you like only neo-folk. :) What kind of music do you like more?
Kim: It's not that I don't want to talk about Saturnus, just that I don't have any nice words to say about them. I'm into a lot of different music. Doom as well. Or maybe more Drone or what you might call it. Like Earth, Sunno))), Wolvserpent, Moss, Monarch etc etc. Also stuff like Asunder. We also recently released an album with the funeral doom project Black Wreath, out on the label Head Not Found. Actually there were a few parts that I wrote way back after the debut release with Saturnus.
Apart from doom I also love the music from Lee Hazlewood and that kind of 60's sounding music. Serge Gainsbourgh, The Paris Sisters etc. And of course also newer stuff like Flaming Lips, The National, The Editors etc. The list goes on...
Evilly:This concert in Russia is for the first time, isn’t it? Why do you like to come to Russia? Do you like traveling? Or you love Russians fans OTWTM? :) Do you want to come to Kiev (Ukraine)? Have you ever been in Ukraine? We also have a lot of interesting places and have fans Of The Wand & The Moon.
Kim: No, this wasn't my first time in Russia. Actually I played a 5 date tour in 2010, and supporting Sonne Hagal in 2008. But I really enjoy playing in Russia. Think the audience is the most grateful that I have encountered. Sure would love to play in Ukraine. Never been there but I love seeing new places around the world. So hopefully someone brings us there some day.
Evilly:I think your music has big commercial potential. I say this because I work with popular music. Are you want create commercial music and been paid for it? Is music your only earning for living or there is something else?
Kim: I make music for my own diversion. If no one would buy it, I would still do it. Of course, it is nice if people buy it so there is money for the next production, but I don't speculate in what is popular. You can never know what might please the public anyway... Guess I should play another style of music if I wanted to make the big bucks.
Evilly:And back to your russians concert... Last question. As “We are Dust” is included the latest album “The Lone Descent” and it is recognized as a hit, why OTWTM don’t perform two my favorite songs - “We are Dust” and “Wintry Mantle”?
Kim: The new songs require a bit more instrumentation I think, and we were only 3 people on stage and with very limited rehearsals. Axel lives in Germany and makes a bit difficult to rehearse when I live in Denmark. But for the forthcoming shows around Europe we will be 7 people on stage, so it will be a bit more 'easy' to get that full sound of the new songs.
About “Wintry Mantle”, we never played that song before. Hmmm... Maybe we should take that up some day.
Evilly: Really hope one day to hear this song live. At a concert in Kiev, for example. Thank you very much for interesting conversation! I think we did a good interview. And we will glad to see you again!
