A short interview with Wesley Eisold - creator and vocalist COLD CAVE, we've done before his concert in Russia. Report from the concert in Moscow you can see the section REPORTAGES.

Evilly: Hello. I'm very pleased to meet you and do this interview. I really hope that we'll get something interesting and useful. Because we haven't a lot materials in Russian about you and your band COLD CAVE and Ukraine knows about you even less.

I don’t want to do banal interview, especially with such an interesting person, but some of the questions must be asked. Tell us how you move from the American punk to darkwave. What it was began for COLD CAVE and where to move now?

Wesley Eisold: My first love in music was as a child in the 80's. The Cure, The Smiths, The Sisters Of Mercy, New Order and Depeche Mode were very influential then and now. I also loved punk and hardcore, especially the Misfits/Samhain. I started playing punk sounding music in my early teens and then did my first "real" band at age 19, American Nightmare. I did that and other projects but was always the singer. When I wanted to make my own music, I wanted to make music that I loved and that I was capable of playing/writing without relying on anyone else. So I started COLD CAVE.

Evilly: You can gauge the popularity COLD CAVE in the world? For example, “in America, I have thousands of fans, in Europe - hundreds, in Russia (thanks to Arcto Promo) soon will also hundreds, and in Ukraine people don’t know about me”. Is it true?

Wesley Eisold: Thousands in Europe too. Seems close to accurate though. The thing is I don't want to just come to Russia once. I want to play there as often as I can. I would like to play Ukraine as well.

Evilly: We also would be very pleased to hear you in Kiev, for example. I know, in general, you have concerts in clubs, but when and where was your biggest concert? In scope and number of people.

Wesley Eisold: Some festivals in Europe you play in front of 20-30 thousand people. Those are festivals of course though. Maybe the biggest COLD CAVE show was four thousand people at the Getty in LA.

Evilly: In the summer you had a small American tour with Boyd Rice, but many of the shows were canceled due to Mr. Rice and his reputation. How you reacted to this? You're not afraid to deserve such a reputation for COLD CAVE?

Wesley Eisold: I find it boring and uneducated and sad.

Evilly: Last video "Black boots" was made for you by Russian film director, with the participation of Russian clothing designer and now you are traveling with two concerts to Russia. For you this is a coincidence or a pattern?

Wesley Eisold: Fate, perhaps.

Evilly: When will the world see "Sunflower" - your third album? Only some months to new 2014 year. This album will surprise us with something new, or it wills familiar sound by COLD CAVE?

Wesley Eisold: Middle of 2014 I want to release it. It will sound like COLD CAVE, but as you know, COLD CAVE has varied in many ways but is still sounding like COLD CAVE at all times.

Evilly: Seeing how many people make the tattoo with some symbols or words of your songs , the first thing that came to mind - a comparison you with Ian Curtis. What do you think about this? You are often compared to him? How did you feel about creativity Joy Division?

Wesley Eisold: I'm humbled by this because I know how I feel for certain musicians.. and that anyone feels that for me comes with great honor.

Evilly: And you have an interesting logo - a flower. What does it mean? This is a deeply symbolic?

Wesley Eisold: The logo is Sage. Sage is used for cleansing. The existence of sage as our logo implies that there is a need for cleansing. It is also protection.

Evilly: What you're listening, I'm not going to ask. I saw your playlist for w-o-s.ru. Impressed by the variety, but why is there without hardcore?

Wesley Eisold: Because they asked me to list music I was listening to and I'm not listening to hardcore.

Evilly: Very interesting. In your company "Heartworm Press" publishes books by Boyd Rice and Genesis P-Orridge. How did you meet them both? They come to you? Is there a desire to make with them common musical projects?

Wesley Eisold: Mutual friends originally. It could be nice to create with them but who knows if that will ever happen.

Evilly: In addition to music even really want to talk to you about the style. You can rightly be called an "icon of dark community" or so-called style of nu-goth. How do you feel about that? You like to draw attention to their appearance?

Wesley Eisold: I think aesthetic is very important. I think fashion is important. I think both usually go terribly wrong though.

Evilly: You even have a single about black boots! What is such interesting shoe that inspired you? What brand? :)

Wesley Eisold: It's more referential to a military idea... not just about a pair of shoes or something.

Evilly: And in general, what are your favorite brands? Do you have experience working model at shows or advertising face for some brands in fashion industry?

Wesley Eisold: For me designers like Ann Demeulemeester, Rick Owens, Carol Christian Poell and Alexandre Plokhov fit my aesthetic and i appreciate their visions. I'm not a model I've just become lucky in a few photographs.

Evilly: You had offers to act in film? If it had a chance, and you could choose a role - what would it be? Positive character or a fiend? Or maybe something tragic, but hidden joviality, like your songs?

Wesley Eisold: No, nothing yet. I think something between positive and negative. One foot on both sides of the line.

Evilly: I know that in the past with parents you have traveled a lot. Have been in Ukraine? In Kiev? I really hope that after this interview, the number of your fans will increase significantly and you come to us with a concert. We will wait!

Wesley Eisold: I never have been to Kiev. I hope to one day. Maybe 2014 will allow for this. For now, Russia is next. Thanks to all those in Ukraine who listen to COLD CAVE.
