Macelleria Mobile di Mezzanotte - Black Lake Confidence [2013]
On close examination the gothic part of the Italian music scene has been so rich and varied that hard to imagine. And I really want to share this wealth with the readers of our portal. So, today tell you about the first vinyl record of Roman band Macelleria Mobile di Mezzanotte (or just MMM) - stylish hipsters (here I ask not to mix up with modern hipsters!, they are originate from the 40s of the last century), which create own dark jazz, they worship to blues kings who lived almost a hundred years ago and actively supported dark swing subculture.
Although clearly define the genre of the band MMM very difficult. Next to their name can be found words such as crime-jazz, death dub, cabaret noir, ambient, dark folk, dark jazz, drones, experimental, noise, spoken word, power electronics and many others. Yet, not to confuse you finally we focus on the dark jazz, as the most versatile in my opinion.![Macelleria Mobile di Mezzanotte - Black Lake Confidence - poster [2013]](/images/projects/cdreviews/MMM-poster.jpg)
Black Lake Confidence is the sixth studio album in 12-year history of the band and leans over to genres such as noise, dark ambient and cinematic dub in their sound. Also, in the band appeared saxophone and compared with the previous album Hard Boiled Night Club it added new soft elegance and gracefulness. Also unusual compared to other format. This time he came out as a digital release, which can be purchased on the official issuing the label Trips und Träume (link at end of article) and on vinyl, the edition of which at the time of this writing has reached sold out - less than two months after release date. Although, I will open a little secret, the band plans to launch the second edition, because collectors need have something to rejoice.
And finally we move on to the internal filling black-black plates in a black box. It contains only 8 tracks, but despite this is fully integrated and complete.
Tracklist:
1. The Big Nowhere
2. 1952
3. Death Of A Caddie
4. Kennedism
5. Just You And I
6. Drive In Lovers
7. Wilma, The Shore
8. Black Lake Confidence
The album opens the track The Big Nowhere, that musicians call "psycho-epic doom." It is really epic, but I think it's not like doom. Although I will not rule out the possibility that the true connoisseurs of the genre hold parallels and argue with me. The next track 1952 - "black drone anthem" (in the press-release artists had a rant without stint) with Italian text, which gives a special sound (remember that Italian is most melodious in the world). Death Of A Caddie is probably the most expressive and passionate song of the album. And after I've seen also live show, can imagine how Adriano (vocalist) cuddle microphone like his girlfriend for a kiss. Track Kennedism sends us in American history and to mix with radio samples about death of President Kennedy. Next Just You And I is my favorite track, an absolute hit that even had a video - classic by Badalamenti and Lynch, who sends us straight to the town of Twin Peaks in search of Laura Palmer. Drive In Lovers is harsh and hypnotic crescendo with a truly enchanting voice Adriano. Track Wilma, The Shore is dedicated to big murder of model Wilma Montesi, which remains unsolved in 50-s and led to a scandal involving government officials.
Well, in the final Black Lake Confidence talks about the fictional place that unites all in one image - black shores of Bolsena. "Black Lake Confidence" where met Twin Peaks, Capocotta and Dallas - met and came back to life.
So in the end we hold in our hands not only good music, but the thing that besides the actual sound also contains a cultural and historical formation. Which is especially valuable in our time "music for the sound". Recommended to first listen into the calm atmosphere of the evening with a good glass of wine and without distractions. Plunged properly into the black lake once you have all the chances to fall in love with him forever...
